Ricki ~ "Kindness"

"KINDNESS IS KING."

Ricki Lake is a self-taught treasure for transformation, a humble teacher in the living art of “no doubt” by obliterating self-doubt when it does appear, and who reminds us that even knee-dropping trauma in our lives can transcend to our greatest triumphs.

“I always feel like I’m the underdog outsider. It’s my comfort zone. I prefer to feel like the every-person. Nothing is automatic. Yet it’s there for all of us.”

Crucible moments that have formed and transformed you?

“I have to start with John Waters in 1988 for seeing and believing that I was his Tracy Turblad. On every level, Tracy was my art to imitate in my life. A metaphor of confidence. To speak my mind, to inspire others to do the same, to feel beautiful inside despite what the outside world may tell you. And I did. Time and again. Thank goodness my grandmother always instilled in me that I was special, that i could do anything. What a gift before she died when I was 9.

Trauma has touched every decade of my existence. I imprinted rolling uncontrollably backward in a brake-failed car down a hill at the age of five, I was sexually abused the following year, I visually witnessed the second plane fly down the Hudson to see it crash in the second tower, I lit the digital candle that exploded and burned my Malibu house to the ground, and receiving the crippling email that my second husband took his life has cumulatively created PTSD to nurture. I’m no hero, yet I am proud that from every pain point, I shook loose from any stuck-ness to allow myself to embrace a new doorway.”

Where has your golden light been hidden from the world?

“Self-kindness is where I have had the greatest difficultly in my past. I’ve neglected to care of my self while caring for others. I’ve straddled spectrums of love and loss, of believing in myself and thinking holy shit, how am I going to pull this off? And in those moments, my only thought is to obliterate self-doubt by just going for it with everything I got.”

What is your life work?

“My calling is to inspire sovereign choice where all can claim their voice. I do this through documentary films around women’s health. My greatest life work will always be The Business Of Being Born my most personal piece of art, and a metaphor for where it all begins.”

a favorite quote for living?

“You can’t fly when you rest in the nest. Get out of your comfort zone. The sweetest fruit is on the furthest limbs.”

What do you see in One Golden Thread?

“I see an important message of a profound awakening that we are all golden inside. To witness a man that every day wakes with a passion and purpose is infectious. It’s truly heart-warming to witness. I had no idea the damage that has been done through gross negligence of fashion industry. The idea that you don’t have to compromise quality and comfort while doing right by the planet is a gift, as is Jeff Scult in my life.”

A Parting thought?

“Kindness is not just king. It is everything. See kindness in every thing. Just open your eyes a bit more.”
