A Bow of Gratitude: Interbeing is Well-Being

Posted by Jeff Scult on

One never knows where our heroes will come from. When they will appear. And sometimes we never meet them.

As I was just beginning the formulating of One golden thread in 2016, I was sitting at Soho House NYC sharing the vision with a powerful philanthropist entrepreneur named Gilad. I remember saying, “I’ve come to realize that the greatest lie is the illusion of separation, and not between us, but between nature, and one as us. That we, indeed, are not apart from nature, we are a part of nature; and perhaps the material reminder may inspire us to be better stewards of the planet.”

Gilad said, “Ah, you are speaking to Interbeing, the state of interconnectedness of all things and beings in the universe.”

Interbeing.

I’d never heard the term before that moment, and yet it immediately landed as grounding and inspiring language foundational to the regenerative ethos that I wished to imbue.

He continued, “The order Of Interbeing was created in the 60s by the Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh.”

Ah, synchronicity. Had two of his books on my shelf.

I went home that night and googled everything that I could find. The 14 precepts were a remarkable blueprint for living with inner peace, the path I was and continue to be on. Google it and read some thoughts I share on the OGT website blog (under Thread).

And the 108 icon birthed from my heart and the hands of savant collaborators, speaks to all this - infinite connection with self, to others, to Planet.

During that first google search, another synchronicity moment of following the thread:

Thich Nhat Hanh formed the order of Interbeing it read “sometime between 1964 and 1966”.

I was born in 1965. Chills, baby.

Thank you for indulging another backstory of the Golden Thread; among those many who fed me to create, the two at the tip of the spear are Thich Nhat Hanh and my mother and her “nature and us is one” art.

A deepest bow of earth-connected gratitude to this blessing of a being, a hero for the universe, Thich Nhat Hanh.
